It allows you to use 58mm diameter filters on lenses with a filter thread of 72mm. You can also use reverse rings of 58mm on lenses with 72mm thread.

Warning: Since the lens has a diameter greater than the filter or inverter ring thread, it can cause vignetting. It will depend on the type of lens, camera, sensor, and filter size...
